Stuart-

I might be able to help a little on this one.... I have v3.1, you probably
have a newer build even though the version number is the same; here's how
it worked for me:

Install the suite as root into /opt/StarOffice/.... root apparently does
administration of the application suite, as you can't do a user
installation as root from their X setup app. I'm sure a saavy hacker could
set it up manually.

You then need to log in as a user, start X, and run the user setup
program. This is from the README:

'Every user who wants to use StarOffice should execute
/opt/StarOffice-3.1/setup after the system installation is completed. The
setup program will offer an installation menu with four options. Please
choose the first and default option: "User installation".'

The actual binaries are in /opt/StarOffi../linux../bin and are called

scalc3
swriter3,

et cetera.

I'm running KDE, so I just created some desktop icons for them, after
running my install program. I found that I had to start a new login and
start X again from it (as the installed user, not root) before the apps
would run.

You can execute these programs from an xterm like:

scalc3 &

providing you pay particular attention to running the appropriate .sh file
from somewhere near the end of your .profile (in your home dir). The
install puts 2 .sh files in there, one for bash and one for C shells.
Basically they just insert the bin directory in your $PATH with syntax
based on your current platform.

Actually, I did figure out how to install as root to use: I put the
/opt/S.../linux../bin dir in my path manually at the shell and then ran
/opt/StarOffice-3.1/setup from the shell, and it worked fine.

I don't have motif installed; so I have used that static binaries... Once
it bombed and I had to reinstall the package. That's the only trouble I've
had.
