SuSE are the resource for XFree86 for some newer boards. There are some
problems with the SuSE version, such as the truly peculiar way in which
24bpp packed operations are handled. This seems to result in the Server
being slower in 24bpp packed than in 24bpp unpacked (32bpp) mode; there
should be about a 25% speed up if implemented properly, as in
Accelerated-X ;-) . The odd operational mode can also cause some
applications to fail or to display strangely. If you do use XFree86,
then use 8bpp, 16bpp or 32bpp only.
The major problems with SuSE support appear to be that their Anon-FTP
site suffers frequent reorganisation. I was doing benchmarking
comparisons with Accelerated-X recently and over a period of a few days
their X Server disappeared and reappeared in different places on the
site, sometimes coming back where it was first found... Also the X
Server Configuration program on the site seems to arbitrarily change rev
levels. Having been testing under SuSE 5.2, I had downloaded the latest
versions of the SuSE configuration program. At the end of the test
period, I wanted to check that I had still got the most up to date
versions, and I could only find lower rev versions of the configuration
program. Very confusing.
The SuSE X Server does fail the X Test Suite (meaning that strictly
speaking it is not an X Server) and it is markedly slower than
Accelerated-X 4.1.2 on SuSE 5.2. The speed difference varies with color
depth but XF86_SVGA from SuSE with Matrox Millennium II AGP support
appears to about 50% of the speed of Accelerated-X with AGP. We intend
to start publishing benchmark results on our Web Site soon, showing the
Accelerated-X and XFree86 config files that we used. I can not find any
site with current Xmark results for XFree86... If anyone knows of a
site, I'd love to hear about it!
