You see, this is not my problem. Win95 logins work great. My problem is
a login from win98. I don't know for sure, but this is my guess. Win95
just ships the passwd plain text across the network. This works fine.
Win98 ships it encrypted because it sees me as an nt machine. So I
changed my announce as line to say win95 hoping that win98 would try to be
backwards compatible and sent the plain text passwd. No luck. When it
was still set for NT, I said encrypt passwords = yes and logins broke all
to hell from win95 and still didn't work for 98. I just took a look the
data from sniffit, from win98, I get plain text passwords, encrypted in
some form or another, but it is ascii text... no login. From 95, I get a
bunch of non-ascii crap, but it does login. Settings for this test were
announca as = NT
encrypt passwords = no
there is an entry in /etc/smbpasswd for that user, and the data in it
doesn't even almost match the data that I get from the sniff of the win98
attempted login, but then again, it doesn't match the data from the 95
machine either.

Find the smbpassword file which will if you cat it show fields with
32 'X' this file contains the hashes of windows password.
here is where you add the hashes created by windows for encrypted passwords.

encrypted passwords on samba so
am trying to figure out the
command to insert hashes from
windows into password file. Note
be certain to add 'encrypt passwords'
only after you can successfully map
using plain text. Then proceed to the
more secure method.
