I've gotten my samba working, and here's how my passwords work. In the
/etc/smb.conf file, I have 'encrypt passwords = yes', and also 'smb passwd
file = /etc/smbpasswd'. I found that I had to specify it because when I
said 'smbpasswd -a user' and added a passwd for that user to the smbpasswd
file, it created the file and added the user to /etc/smb.conf. Later
examination of the Makefile however showed that smbd is compiled for the
smbpasswd file to be in /usr/local/samba/private/smbpasswd. This seemed
to fix a lot of thing. Now, any user can log in from any win95 or 98
machine, I have encryption working and all that other stuff also. If
you'd like a copy of my smb.conf file, I'd be more than happy to let you
have it.

Since there is currently a discussion about SAMBA problems I thought I
would
add mine as well :)

We are using SAMBA internally as a file and print server for a couple of
Win95
and NT machines, security isn't really an issue as this is an isolated
network.
I have enabled plane-text passwords in windows NT, but when connecting
to the SAMBA machine I get the following messages in my syslog:
Sep 17 15:24:27 harley PAM_pwdb[847]: 1 authentication failure; (uid=0)
-> jdoe for samba service
This message scrolls and scrolls and after about 5 or 6 of them and then
NT pops
up a box saying the password I supplied as incorrect (my NT password and
UNIX
passwords are exactly the same). I then type in the same user name and
password
in this box and it connects the service.
This behavious is of course extremely annoying and fills up my logs file
with tons of
unneeded information.

What can I do to fix this?
