Correct me if I'm wrong: This printer will work without a bidirectional connection. 
The second
direction is only used to send extra status messages to the computer. We used such a 
printer with a
Novell server (HP DJ something, it changes all the time), which do not use such 
things. And I'm not
sure whether Linux cares about what the printer is sending as extra status messages.

I've seen such connections, which never worked as bidirectional.

I did not do it with linux, but I experimented with w95, and was running, although the 
printer
connection was unidirectional (w95 drivers could handle that).
