I found Red Hat 5.1. very easy to set up. Perhaps the best for novices.

I am using Star Office. I haven't tried Applixware, yet. As far as I know 
Applixware is not free. I think Star Office is pretty good. Haven't found 
anything, that's missing compared to MS Worst, yet. But in a way it's always a 
question what you really need...
