as a first step using ppp-o* scripts is the right way to basically set
up the modem
it's easyer than setting pppd and chat (ss.). ppp-o* scripts with
discriptions

after this first step is done u shoud consider setting up diald and / or
a caching proxy. in most cases it makes since allthough
u are using a single machine. helpful for setting up automated
comunication to the net are
