I have had several dozen replies to my panicky call for help, and as time permits I will try to answer many of them individually. But for now, I got past my nasty password problem and have the chat/modem problem solved too. I am still uncertain what got me into that corner, but I think the key was the craziness between cua# and ttyS# devices that most of you responders seemed to know all about.
