Hiya's =)
My hard drive crashed recently, I lost everything, and was forced to buy
new Redhat 5.2 CD's and completely reinstall Linux. I am not a total
newbie to Linux as I have been using it for the past 2 years, however, I
am not the person who originally installed it on my computer, (my ex BF
did) and after this new installation I have some very perplexing problems
that I cannot figure out how to correct/change.
I have read the NET3-HOWTO, DNS-HOWTO, PPP-HOWTO, IP-MASQUERADE-HOWTO, been
to all of the web sites, read all of the newsgroups, gone through docs and
books until they're coming out my ears, and still can not get this working.
My ISP tells me they "don't support linux" (Voyager.net), and Linux RedHat
has informed me that they won't support my Linux Redhat 5.2 because I bought
it from Office Max - which was ALMOST enough to make me trash the whole thing
and go back to Winblows. This is Linux RedHat 5.2 I'm running and it doesn't
matter who packaged the thing - it's RedHat software and RedHat should give
me technical support! And, Macmillan Digital Publishing hasn't answered the
request for technical support I emailed them over a week ago - so I end up
with NO technical support at all? *sigh*
Okay, enough ranting. Anyway, I have a new 4.2gig drive, and I have just
installed RedHat 5.2 on it. I have 3 computers connected via ethernet cards,
am using one of them as a hub, and am trying to get IP masquerading working
correctly along with everything else. The hub is the machine that dials out
to my ISP - and of course it had to be THAT machine's hard drive that died.
My set-up is this:
* I have 3 computers, 1 hub and 2 others connected via ethernet cards.
* IP masquerading worked fine in my old linux between all 3 boxes. The
other 2 boxes are still set up as they were originally, so I have to try
and set up the hub to match the other machine's configurations, which I
can't seem to do.
* I can telnet fine from the hub, but I can't telnet directly from the other
machines as I could before, I have to telnet to the hub first, and then I
can telnet out from there.
* I have to delete this route to get ppp to work at ALL on the hub:
route del 0.0.0.0 netmask 0.0.0.0 eth0
* Traceroute doesn't work - but nslookup, ftp and ping work fine!
* My old PPP script had a +ua option in it. The script will no longer
work - it complains there is no such option any more. Is there a new
replacement that I can substitute for the +ua option? If not, am I
going to have to install an _old_ version of PPP rather than give up my
great old script? (I don't like the new method - my script was just
the way I wanted it. :P)
* I either flagged "News Server" when I configured, or I failed to UN-flag
it, but now my hub is "opening a session for user news" every few minutes
and I'd like to un-do it, but I can't find any docs that tell me how.
Is there some nice Linux guru out there who would be kind enough to help me
with a little 1-on-1 instruction on fixing this stuff? =)
Thanks,
-Kathi
