RedHat 6.0 mounts the /dev/pts as a file system using /etc/fstab. This was
not done in the previous RedHat versions. If you accidently step on this
entry in the fstab, you can't log into the machine remotely because the
filesystem in question won't be mounted. There is an updated set of RPM's
for dev, rxvt and screen. Point your browser at
http://www.redhat.com/corp/support/errata/rh60-errata-general.html#dev_rxvt_
screen
<http://www.redhat.com/corp/support/errata/rh60-errata-general.html#dev_rxvt
_screen> for full details and upgrade instructions.

The fstab entry should look like:

        none /dev/pts devpts
gid=5,mode=620       0 0

This is after you have updated the involved RPMs.

        Subject: "Out of ptys"

I did an installation of RedHat 6.0 recently and now when I try to
rlogin to the computer, or even open an xterm locally I get

        "Out of ptys"

        or when using telnet:

"telnetd: All network ports in use.
Connection closed by foreign host. "

Does anyone knows what is happening here?

        In /dev I ran

        MAKEDEV pty

        and then even

        MAKEDEV generic

But that didn't solve the problem. All 175 ptys are there in /dev,
so
the machine is not really out of ptys. However in /dev/pts it never
has
        more than 6 numbers open.

Any help would be most appreciated.

        Thanks

        Hugo
