I have successfully used kermit for this. At 5 K bytes/sec
(57.6 Kbd), 20 M bytes is dumped per hour. The setup time was
less than an hour the first time (mostly laying the cable), and
is now less than a minute (most of which is the time to walk
between the machines). Their are certainly ways to achieve
faster transfer rates, but this required the least of my time.

My copy of kermit supports a terminal connection making it
trivial to establish and test the connection. I use a home-made
passive adapter (which I already had) to convert from the RS-422
used by the Mac to the RS-232 used by the Dell. I will send you
the pinouts upon request (though you will need to wait until
~10/1/99). I set the mac in server mode, and transfer an entire
directory.
