to go back to regular old unix passwd files run

# pwunconv
and then
# grpunconv

I am not sure if these are well behaved enough to do the Right Thing 
with partially converted passwd files...  it might not be a bad idea 
to make backups first (never a bad idea :))

if you want to add proper support for shadowed passwords relatively 
easily look into the Linux PAM project (Pluggable Authentication 
Modules)
