I've been frustrated trying to set up a dedicated Linux workstation because
the systems I've used, although they had very accceptable video under that
OTHER operating system, just would not present a decent desktop under
XFree86. This includes two systems that supposedly have XFree compatible
servers, the SiS 5589 and the Rage 3D Pro. The former will do a bad job of
higher resolutions if forced on the command line, the latter will do no more
than 640x480x16.
So I give up - I'll buy a video system specificly for the Linux station.
What should I get?
I don't need full-screen real-time 3D movies, I just need a decent desktop
equivalent to the Redmond product running at 800x600x16m, something that
will show a whole web page at once with decent clarity, something where I
don't need a freznel lenz on the monitor to read the fonts. I will most
likely use an existing 15" monitor, but if that's a critical component I'll
try for a decent 17" from ViewSonic or someone.
