You did either one of the two:
1. Compiled the IDE/ATAPI drive as a module or
2. Compiled the EXT2 filesystem as a module.
I am guessing it is the first one you goofed up - maybe you did both who knows.
You do have a backup kernel on your harddisk don't you !!

The error is still 03:00. The rescue floppy is gone for a toss. WHen I
try to boot from it it says
Kernel panic : .... 02:00
H E L P ! ! ! !
It is a Linux only machine. NO other partitions.
