You like using tar.gz files? I suggest you try any one of these after
installing a tar.gz package:
1. Get a list of all the files that the package installed in your system(no
sneak peeking at the Makefile allowed)
2. Given a file in your system, try and find out which package it came
from...
3. Package not working? Some file missing? Try and find out which ones are
missing from a package.
4. Too less disk space? Try uninstalling the package...(very few packages
support the distclean target in the Makefile)

RPMs are here to manage your system more effectively. You can do all the
above and much more. If you are the power seeker who wants to compile all
the packages to be optimised for your system, you can download SRPMS and
"rebuild" them. For those who would like to add some extra options in the
rebuilding stage can change the SPECS file in the SRPMS. A common grouse is
that the RPM packager sets "arbitatory" paths for various files. You can
use --prefix options to override these.

.DEB packages are also supposed to do all these, but since I am not a
"Debianer" ...but a "crooked RedHatter" ... ;-)
