i can show how to install cocoon using rpms.... though i don't know much of
xml so i cannot show any gr8 apps other than the demos which come with
cocoon.. (i just installed cocoon yesterday on servlet exec)
i can also show installation of mod_ssl & open ssl (again using SRPMS)...
these r pretty simple to do... just follow the manual and u r done... there
is just the problem of certificates.

u can go to the rpm site and download the book which they suggest.. it is
quite good. and if u follow the examples u cud become an expert on doing the
above....
but why do it, when u find SRPMS for almost any application that u might
have in yr mind... i use rpms specifically becauz till date i hav not found
any app w/o rpm/SRPM support.. so reinventing the wheel doesn't make sense
to me... (also u cud go to www.rpmfind.com to find these rpms...)
