I haven't used a Paraport tape drive, but check the following:
Does a file exist /dev/st0 or /dev/st1
When you do a "insmod pt.o", replace with "insmod -v pt.o", and report the
messages you see.
Place a blank or erasable tape in the drive, and, as root, use the command:
dd if=/bin/bash of=/dev/st0
report output.
