I do'nt know how but
I give you instance a example. I have a new kernel,it is called /home/supreet/vmlinuz.
and /vmlinuz is there on my menu. I want to boot with /home/supreet/vmlinuz. Just type
c giving you command-line. do root=(hdx,y) x being disk id from 0 and y being
partition. then kernel=/home/supreet/vmlinuz root=/dev/hdx+1y+1
boot
and it boots.

I think that means that it read ext2 partition. It does not stop there it can read
ufs, msdos and variuous others using modules.
