I just compiled the 2.2.1 kernel and I can't use the printer. I'm new to
this kernel thing so I problably forgot to mark something necessary for
using the printer. It worked on the 2.0.34 kernel. The config file is
attached

Subject: Boot Problem on 8.4 gig drive (x86)
Date: Sun, 07 Feb 1999 20:11:00 -0600

LILO does not install on a 8.4 gig IDE hard drive, please help. Details
are below.

Currently, I have Linux and other OS installed on my PC. I use LILO to
dual boot my system.

I bought a Western digital 8.4 gig drive and want to triple boot my
system Linux, Solaris and SCO. The problem is that when I install Linux
(Red Hat 5.1) on 8.4 gig drive, LILO complains that some error has
occurred. I understand that there is a limitation from PC BIOS. So after

some research, I have following setting for the BIOS.

.
.
.
Extended BIOS RAM Area DOS 1K
.
.
.
IDE auto Detect Enabled
Block mode Auto
Onboard IDE present Auto
PIO mode Auto
32 bit Mode Enabled
Primary 1st LBA Mode Enabled

My PC (before I bought WD drive) was all SCSI. Two SCSI hard disk, one
SCSI tape drive and CD-ROM. All of these are controlled by ADA 2490.
Western digital drive is IDE and I am trying to use controller on the
mother board. Since in a combined SCSI/IDE system, you have to boot from

IDE this problem aries.

Please reply all, so I get this message mailed to me.

        Yes.
inetd is used as a wrapper for a lot of daemons. Look into /etc/inetd.conf
for the list and into the manpage for description.
In particular, telnetd, ftpd, talkd, fingerd, identd, rshd and rlogind
are often run from inetd.

Hi:

Quick question: Is the Internet Daemon INETD specifically a part of the
Apache WebServer, or is it a basic part of the Linux networking processes?
In other words, if Apache wasn't installed on a particular box, would INETD
still be present and running (assuming everything was setup the normal way).

Another question: Assuming INETD is not specifically tied to Apache, do
other Unix brands (Solaris, HP-UX, DEC-Unix, AIX, SCO, etc.) have an INETD
that works the same way?

Any answers appreciated. Doubly thankful if you would email as well as
posting.

INETD isn't at all related to Apache. Apache in fact usually doesn't use
INETD.

Yes. INETD would still be running. It serves telnet, ftp, pop3, and other
services even if Apache isn't installed.

Essentially.

Hope this helps,

In fact, the Apache team strongly _discourages_ using inetd in favor
of standalone mode. :)

Debian 2.x supports libc5 and libc6 coexisting, and recently on the
development mailing list there was a somewhat heated discussion with
the maintainer of libtool. The issue is that libtool makes heavy use
of the "rpath" feature of the linker to force a library to be in a
particular place -- and this is incompatible with Debian's scheme.
Summary:

The libtool guy: you simply should not move shared libraries around,
for example putting a glibc /usr/X11R6/lib/libX11.so.6 in place of the
libc5 /usr/X11R6/lib/libX11.so.6. This violates the "contract" you
make with the apps at link time: not to replace a shlib with an
incompatible version using the same name.

The Debian people: moving directories around keeps us FSSTND-compliant
and allowed us to smoothly upgrade to libc6 -- our ld.so is up to the
job of finding dependencies without a forced rpath. The rpath feature
is useful for user-installed shlibs outside the lib path, or on OSes
whose dynamic linkers aren't flexible enough to Do the Right Thing
otherwise -- but shouldn't be used for system-installed libraries in
Linux. Our scheme works great -- except when you compile in an rpath.
Thus libtool should respect the way we do things.

The argument has gone in circles. (Probably (IMHO) Debian will end up
editing the Makefiles of all libtool-using apps to use a patched
systemwide copy somewhere.) But in any case the Debian POV applies as
well to LD_LIBRARY_PATH as to compiled-in rpath.

As someone already mentioned it is probably updating the atime of the
directories in the tree containing the file. You may be able to avoid
this by mounting the partition with "-o nodiratime" (not sure which
2.0.x kernels support this). Its cousin, "-o noatime", would probably
help even more, but access times on files are generally a lot more
useful than on directories, hence the two options.
