I have done some more testing here. Seems that the difference is between
the standard pppd options "noipdefault" and the diald options "dynamic".
Using the "ppp-on and ppp-on-dialer" scripts (which are still represented
in the PPP-HOWTO), when I make the connection and after the
PAP negotiation takes place I am provided with a dynamic IP address from
the ISP. If I do an "ifconfig ppp0" from the command line I see the
correct new dynamic address provided by the ascend server( Let say its
198.253.102.222). My real IP address is 44.8.0.112 has been replaced.
The default path is via ppp0 and everything works fine.
When I try the "IFUP ppp0" I make the connection and do the PAP exchange
but the new IP address in not presented. Instead I get a line stating
that the new IP address is 44.8.0.112 (which is my current IP address).
Doing an "ifconfig ppp0" after the connection is established and I see
that my original IP address is in place vice the new dynamic one from the
ascend server. The default route is correct to the ascend server.
This last test is exactly what is happening with diald. I do not get
the new dynamic IP address assigned to my ppp0 port and I end up with
dead end routes.
Now to press on....
