Disclaimer: I'm quite possibly just being too lazy here...
I've got RedHat 5.1, configured with ppp, diald, ip_masquerading.
I'm using this as a router for the Windows machines at home (as
well using it in it's own right).
To speed things up, I've also got bind and squid installed, with the
DNS configured for caching only.
Everything's working :-), but it's working *too* well.
Something (some things?) (I suspect named) keeps wanting the
ppp connection, so diald keeps firing up the modem periodically,
and then dropping it again after about a minute.
- From 6pm to 8am, this is merely irritating, but outside this period,
I'm having to pay for the phone calls.
The low tech solution is simply to turn the modem off (it's external),
since turning it back on is easier than teaching people how to start
the ppp connection manually.
The next option would be to configure diald to not dial up outside
the free period.
The best option would be to find out what's causing the
connections and persuade it to stop.
Can somebody give me a pointer, to avoid me killing another tree
by printing out the HOWTOs?
