Or seems to. You'll have trouble killing an in-progress connect
though because it isn't a distinct process group...

Hmmm... /dev/ttyS1 should have become your controlling tty as soon
as you opened it. Possibilities: diald is not a session leader (it
should be, it calls setsid() early enough), it already has a
controlling terminal (it should not have because it doesn't open
anything but the modem), or diald is not running as root (which
would probably have stopped it dead long ago).
If you do a "ps ax" after starting diald but before it dials it
should have a '?' in the TTY column.
Do you have anything else running on /dev/ttyS1? If so does it
show S1 in the TTY column of a "ps ax"?
