Reporting modem connect speed

My modem (like most others) will report the actual connection speed if
value of "2" is placed in the S95 register or the command 'W2' is
issued.  No matter what I do to the modem init string in the 'connect'
script, the '/etc/log/messages' file gets a 'CONNECT 115200' placed in
it.  What is going on?
