"Link died on remote end" means exactly that :-). You may get
more information if you put "debug" in your ppp options file.
It may just tell you that the remote end requested a close though.
There have been suggestions on the kernel list that there
is something wrong with vj compression so putting "-vj" in
your ppp options might help. There seem to be several other
things dodgy about TCP in 2.2.2 so you probably want to look
out for 2.2.3...
