I have had a problem connecting to my ISP lately, which I
think may be on their end. When diald connects, the
connection drops before the login completes. I haven't
changed the modem, or phone service since long (a couple of
months anyway) before this problem began. I did change the
modem from a jumper configuration to a PnP configuration,
since the modem was locking up _hard_. Is there a way to
determine if the drop is on my end, or on the ISP end?

This section from /var/log/messages shows a failed
connection followed by a successful one. Sometimes it can
take 10 or 15 tries to make a successful connection,
however, once the connection is successful, the link seems
to work fine.
