Peter,

I had exactly this same problem, and finally solved it thusly:

1: diald uses chat to dial. chat will log in using /AutoPPP/
if you leave the USER_NAME and PASSWORD definitions
blank in /etc/diald/connect.

2: Once connected, pppd takes over. To use PAP, the pppd-options
in /etc/diald should specify user <yourname>

3: also, /etc/ppp/pap-secrets should contain a line with
<yourname> * <yourpassword>
this will be used for the authorization through the ppp link.
