We've used both here. We used to have a routed ISDN connection with
dial-back over a free (shh, don't tell BT) line. This was neat. There was
no filtering, no diald (it used a RISCiX box in fact) and it was
completely transparent.

Once we had to pay for the line and the ISP we went to a TA with a
masqueraded network. This can be treated exactly the same as a modem from
a setup point of view. It uses the same commends and works in the same
way. you definatley want to run diald to keep the line costs under
control if you care about that sort of thing at all.

Some ISDN adaptors do not appear like modems. I don't know about the
differences for setting them up, but in general you'd still want diald
for filtering.
