I would assume from pap-secrets and options in /etc/ppp ........ in options 
you set a username to use and in pap-secrets the client (username), server, 
password, ip-address

eg options = user bob
pap-secrets = bob * password * (the wildcards connect to any server and 
ip-address range

I am very new to this myself but hope this helps! (and is reasonably correct!)
