Getting connections FASTER than 33.6 relies on the QUALITY of your phone
lines, specifically, the number of D/A and A/D conversions between your
modem and your central office (and the need for the site you are connecting
to to be directly tied into THEIR central office). If you live too far
away, there may well be too many conversions for 56K. USR (3-com) has a
phone number you can dial to test out the quality of your lines (even with a
33.6 modem!). You can find the number on their WWW site. So far, they
have told me that my lines are incapable of benefitting from a V.90 modem,
so I remain at 33.6 (waiting for 1 of 2 different cable companies to decided
to offer cable modems in my area) B^(
