hmm, deeper and deeper.
Diald needs to control pppd and the link.  This means that 
ppp options should be minimal when using diald, and should be given to
diald to pass to ppp. read the man pages carefully.

my ppp/options file only contains options that do not conflict with
diald. 
"noauth, ipcp-accept{local,remote}, compression options, crtscts"

all other options like port and lock etc are given to diald which knows
what to do.
