Yes, you can use diald with PAP, the you'll have to set up a
"/etc/ppp/pap-secrets" file with root.root as the owner and 600 as the
permissions. In this file, you'll need to set up a line for each
client/host you wish to connect with....
client server secret ip address (This one is optional and I
don't use it)
YourUserID YourISP YourPassword

Then after you get this set up, you'll probably have to change your diald
connect script a bit so that it will use the PAP authentication (by default,
it uses a login script) Unless you want to do other fancy stuff (noisy vs
quiet according to time), you'll just have to have the last line for your
chat script to end with "CONNECT". I'd send you my connect script but right
now I'm playing with connecting to multiple ISP's and my second ISP don't
have PAP set up yet on his end, so it contains passwords:-0 until I can talk
him into setting up PAP on his end:-)
