Title: OFF-TOPIC: How to optimize linux for the internet?

Hi All, I know this one is a bit off topic, but I guess it covers an area that some of you will have had to deal with in the past!

How to optimize linux for the internet?

I have Redhat linux 5.2 with all necessary updates from updates.redhat.com. I am running the kernel 2.2.12. I have installed ISDN for Linux, ipppd, diald 0.99 and ibod controlling the link. I have firewalling and ip masquaring setup. When I connect to sites within my ISP, I get excellent transfer speeds aproaching 16000 cps through our dual ISDN link. However when I connect to sites outside their site, I get very poor transfer speeds. However when I connect through their proxy the speed is still pretty good. The provider has a packet shaper, and I along with 6 other people have a guaranteed bandwidth of 16k a second, so in theory I should be able to get speeds of connection to other sites approaching those I get with their proxy (their proxy is Squid in Linux (RHL 6.0 with Squid 2.2.something, and its not in a proxy chain). However I don't see these speeds, so there must be something I have set wrong. Apparently the other people are not using Linux, and they don't see these problems. According to the ISP, I am the only person who has had to use the Proxy. They think I should get faster speeds without the proxy since the proxy is used by almost all the ISPs other clients. What could be causing it. I have tried changing MTUs and MRUs, but this doesn't seem to make much difference.

Thanks in advance for your help,

Nicholas Waltham
