I have experienced the same sudden line disconnects when I use Netscape. Originally I had configured Netscape to use proxies at my ISP, but then I changed the Netscape configuration to access the Internet directly and now the line stays up the configured 10 minutes. Apparently the proxy communication uses other ports or protocol options than HTTP.
