Be sure your kernel was compiled with the folowing options:
CONFIG_PACKET=y
CONFIG_ETHERTAP=m
Add the following to conf.modules (I believe it will work without
the second line, but this is what I have):
alias tap0 ethertap
options tap0 -o tap0 unit=0
