Tony,

Yes, I did find out how to sort out the tap modules - it was in the mailing
list archive.  Basically, it appears to be something to do with ports.  One
mailing suggested adding the following to the /etc/conf.modules file:

alias tap0              ethertap
options tap0            -o tap0 unit=0

Unfortunately, this causes chat to fail so I had to add this to the
/etc/diald.conf file:

fifo /etc/diald.ctl
tcpport 6500

This forces the first 2 ports to be used & then tap works fine on the third.
Don't ask me what's going on here, I'm staying blissfully ignorant but at
least it works!
