Hi, I've just had this very same problem, here's a solution.

Put 'noauth' (without the quotes) in your /etc/ppp/options file on a line on
it's own.

The reason that it works fine without diald is that pppd only requires that
noauth entry if you have a default route, without diald you wouldn't but
when diald runs you will have one for slip or ethertap.
