In the hope of saving someone some time, it is certainly not necessary
to run named (bind) just to keep sendmail happy.  Possibly, if you
have several hosts on a local net, named is a Good Thing and it does
help with sendmail config, but for a single machine it's overkill.

Named doesn't use the /etc/host.conf or /etc/hosts files.

One of the biggest obstacles to solving 'the sendmail problem' is the
flood of conflicting opinions and suggestions, to which I have just
added.  Therefore, I will shut up now ;-)
