The problem with rpm installs is that people don't see the supporting
documentation that was in the source tar ball.

You have not mentioned what linux kernel version is installed, nor whether
it too is from a rpm (rpm seems doubtful since tap and slip _seem_ to be
missing and RedHat includes both by default).

Note: ethertap is available only for kernels 2.2.x.

If you've compiled your own kernel please recompile with ethertap and/or
slip support. [I'd recommend both unless you are very short on disk space.
Ethertap is the faster interface but is tricky to setup properly so slip
support serves as a backup.]

I assume the person who compiled the diald rpm included the README files.
The usual location for them would be /usr/doc/diald-<version> [you can check
what files were installed by 'rpm -ql diald'] Try following the
instructions in README.ethertap for setting up ethertap support.

Sorry that is no longer the whole story. Diald 0.98 added support for
ethertap interfaces and the current release will work with a tap OR a slip
interface.

As you can see from the log, diald will first try for a tap interface (and
the kernel failed to find one) and then try for a slip interface (which it
also failed to setup).
