Something quick to check then.

For multilink connections you have to give 2 phone numbers to be dialed
(separated by the '&' symbol) even if you use the same number for both
channels.

If I remember correctly you need to use 'ATZ!' to reset the device rather
than the 'ATZ' you'd use with most modems.  You select the auto up/down of
the second channel using the '*D' settings.  Double check (this is from
memory) but I think '*D0=0 *D3=90 *D4=44' might get you back in business.
*D0=0 should enable auto use of second channel, *D3 sets the amount of
traffic (percent value 0 to 99) required before the second channel is
activated *D5 sets the traffic before the second channel drops.

I haven't used this device with linux so I'm of no further help and I could
be completely off in left field. :-)
