Ricahrd,
Try putting the hostnames and IP addresses of your mail and news servers in your
local /etc/hosts file. This should stop any DNS lookups from trying to access
your ISP's DNS servers. Also make sure that /etc/nsswitch.conf has a line like
this in it:
hosts: files dns
And /etc/hosts.conf looks like this:
order hosts,bind
multi on
These files set the order of host lookups so that the local /etc/hosts file will
be looked at before a DNS lookup.
