On Mandrake it does compile without problems. And how do you define messy ? ;)

Really? When I compiled linuxtv-1.0.1 against 
kernel-2.4.21-something-mdk make complained that Rules.make din't exist
(make menuconfig not executed, maybe) and even after having run it there 
were a lot of unresolved symbols.
