Default changed for 2.6.1 (patch-2.6.1.bz2):

Then the file Documentation/dvb/firmware.txt is wrong:

+- tda1004x: firmware is loaded from path specified in
+      DVB_TDA1004X_FIRMWARE_FILE kernel config
+      variable (default /etc/dvb/tda1004x.bin); the
+      firmware binary must be extracted from the windows
+      driver

Who can change that?
