To respond to my last email. Someone immediately suggested I should apply against the linuxtv.org hg tree. Of course they had a valid point and I gave that a go.
I didn't have to muck around with symlinking the C header files like I did with the kernel sources, and everything compiled first time. I installed the modules and rebooted the machine to be sure. Once back in MythTV I still experienced the near immediate lock up of the picture with the ability to drop back to the main MythTV window.
