All these various error reports seem to suggest to me some sort of issue with timing. 
ie 
some work, some don't, errors once then works..

We have seen some issues similar to this in a STPC system (non-linux) that we had to 
write 
BIOS for.

Although you wouldn't think haveing the hardware respond too fast would be a problem 
*grin*

I have also seem some similar stuff reported on the free-bios list.

It looks like in the near future I will be getting linux to boot out of ROM on a STPC 
that 
will have to talk to a CF as well.  Perhaps I will investigate and see if I can figure 
out 
what's causing the errors.  

Anybody tried looking at the ext2 code to see what kind of debugging output is 
available?
