The message is because it's set to SIG_DFL - which is to kill the script when it gets a sigpipe. The shell's job is to print the exit status of processes that die abnormal deaths.

This is all normal.

But, filing a bug to double-check that ALL signals are set to SIG_DFLT is a good idea.
