and i still dont understand how what you have helps because later on you have:

so you still run the "which" part anyway. nod, closer inspection revealed that
the irony is that in getting it to work on Darwin again I apparently
re-broke it on Solaris (or was it FreeBSD?)
so now Matt gets to be pissed at me :-(
