I am sorry to have to write this email.
These lists are intended to be a place where we can learn things,
discuss things, disagree over things in a spirit of working together for
our common good. And, for the most part, this has really worked well.
Unfortunately, there are some members of these mailing lists who have
acquired a habit of choosing insult over facts, and choosing pejorative
terms intended to bait, personally hurt and harm the reputations of
those they address.
Although I have occasionally warned people about this privately in the
past, unfortunately, I have tolerated this behavior for far too long
from certain people.
Beginning immediately, anyone who chooses insults, ad hominem attacks,
and so on, will be given one private warning. The next time they
violate these rules, their posts will be moderated for a period of one
month.
Should this not be sufficient to discourage this behavior, and it
returns within 6 months, they will be banned from posting to the list
for a period of one month.
Should this be insufficient, they will be banned for a period of one year.
I trust that this note and the occasional warning will be sufficient,
and that none of these remedies will ever be needed.
If such behavior should go unnoticed, please inform me privately, and I
will deal with it appropriately.

Alan Robertson
