If a node is to be out of service for a longer period, it's best
to remove it from the cluster for the time being.

If I got it right, this also belongs to good/bad maintenance
practice. When you say "the switch" do you mean the network
switching device? If so, you shouldn't break it :)

Yes, those would do as well. Though I still think that you could
live with your ILOs. If the problem is network connectivity, try
to improve that.
