It depends on what you are doing.  If you are running something like a 
squid proxy that doesn't really need to maintain state and listens on 
all interfaces by default, all you need is to float an IP address to a 
backup machine if the primary fails and back when the primary comes back 
up.  It only gets messy when the apps need to be constrained or restarted.
