I'm pretty sure I didn't say anything at all about Debian there.  What I 
wanted was advice on the best platform that had a packaged, re-usable 
setup available that was likely to be maintained in updates for a long 
time.  And if waiting for CentOS 6.x and some EPEL packages is the only 
way, I'll wait.  I've learned the hard way that I'm not good at 
maintaining local hacks.
